Phoebes

Yesterday’s fierce storm apparently brought down the Phoebes' nest from outside our bedroom window. But thankfully the baby birds were fledged. Chuck was the first to spot all three little ones sitting side by side on a tree branch. They were so sweet and still, as if their folks had told them to stay put and not make a peep. Their parents were in active evidence, so we retreated and are hoping for the best for the whole family.

Today brought another hot and humid morning followed by thunder, lightning, torrential rains and high winds. As the clouds filled in this afternoon, I snapped this picture of our milkweed plant. Hopefully tomorrow the heat wave will break as predicted, the storms will cease and the Phoebes will all be well.

after 2 days of SWELTERING heat and humidity {thank the Lord for a/c}, we had our major storm last night which brought much cooler weather today. guess it must have moved on down towards your way.

sorry to hear about the birdies :( at least they could fly. ummm...why are they called the phoebes?

haven't seen or thought of milkweed in years and years. i remember it from when i was little and opening the dried up pods later on.

hope your weather breaks soon. humidity is the devil, LOL.

Hi BB -
We are grateful both for our AC and the lovely, cool Canadian air you are generously about to send our way!
The Phoebes are wonderful little birds with a distinctive bobbing or pumping tail motion when at rest - which is never for long! They love to light on tomato stakes and fence posts and then dart off to catch insects. Their name comes from the sound of their call. Here's a link.
I posted a couple of pictures of the same stand of milkweed with their pods this past winter. One on February 3 and one on February 14.
Enjoy the break in the weather!

it actually got "cold" here, if you can call it that. well, errr ... compared to the monsoon-like weather we just had.

wow, there IS actually a bird called by that name. LOL, i thought it was some reference/link to a certain "Friends" character ;P wonder if we get them here. all i see in the city [where i am] are sparrows, crows, pigeons and an odd robin or two.

thanks for taking the time to add the links. i don't think i've ever seen the plant except in its dried up state. then again, i probably never noticed....

Hi BB -
You may have Phoebe's in your park areas, because the Wikipedia link shows a photo of a Phoebe near Montreal!
