A Special Problem

Chuck and I aren’t big drinkers. I can hear members of my family who read this blog saying: “ Hey! How about that liquor closet of yours?” It’s true. We do have an entire, albeit small, closet devoted to wine, liquor, liqueurs and bar paraphernalia. But we really don’t drink that much, that often. (I’m going to stop trying to explain myself, because you folks are going to start thinking: “ Methinks she doth protest too much!”) However we are experiencing a bit of a liqueur crisis right now. We recently ran out of Kahlua Especial. That’s not the crisis. The crisis is that we can’t find it anywhere. I know. It’s true. We are the kiss of death with all kinds of wonderful products. But in this instance Kahlua is still producing this intense espresso liqueur, but no one in our area is carrying it.

So begins another quest. After trying several of the big liquor stores and a couple of packies, we’re going to attempt to special order it. We’ve had good luck in the past with special orders through Kappy’s in Leominster. Again, I think I’m compounding the perception about our alcohol consumption by mentioning we special order alcoholic beverages. Maybe I should just delete this entire post? Or perhaps I should mention that in a previous life I was a drug and alcohol counselor?

Aw, the heck with it! If you like coffee and you’re of legal drinking age wherever you reside, go try a bottle of Kahlua Especial. If enough of us keep enjoying it, they’ll never stop making it.

My finger is still hovering over the delete button...

One of my fav drinks is a Kahlua Dom Pedro. The Dom Pedro, is a popular South African drink available in restaurants and bars everywhere. It's basically a milkshake made with vanilla ice cream, cream and some Kahlua OR Amarula (proudly South African liqueur that is rich and creamy, but with a subtle fruity flavour) OR whiskey. Good luck in your search... Hugs,xx

Don't feel bad/embarassed- I've decided building my tolerance for 100+ proof bourbon should be a personal character goal. Looking for a particular type of booze is fine in my book!

Besides, Phil and I have been in search of Sangster's Rum Cream for a few years now. Only sold in Jamaica (as far as we have seen), and online (but in a shady way that makes us not want to buy it online), it is so delicious. We brought bottles back from our honey moon, they lasted about 3 months!

Hi Lailaa & Kate -
You've created a new problem for us.
Both the South African Amarula and the Jamaican Sangster's Rum Cream sound delicious. But I doubt we'll be able to find them around here!

The first mixed drink I ever had was at a cousin's wedding. Someone brought me a "Sombrero" - basically milk and cream mixed with coffee liqueur. I was probably 14 or so and thought I was ever so mature and sophisticated!

Hey Lee - I love Kahlua, much nicer than Tia Maria, hoever you will need to explain the bit about " a couple of packies"???? you won't believe what it means over here! (it's not good btw)

Hi Roo -
Uh Oh!!! How much should I be blushing?

"Packie" in this context and here in Southern New England, means a "package store". Which is another name for a liquor store. For a long time, a package store was the only place you could buy hard liquor, wine and beer.

Language can be such a minefield. I never know when something I post here is going to go "Boom!"

P.S. I agree. Even regular Kahlua has it all over Tia Maria.

Lee, a Packie (in the UK & Australia) is a person from sub-continental Pakistan (tis tres rude).

Hahaha the post and the comments are hilarious. LOVE Kahlua - its so lovely with some crushed ice and also just on its own or drizzled over ice cream or in a Dom Pedro (you gotta try it).

Hi Ronnie -
Ooooh! Drizzled over ice cream!
Why didn't I think of that?!
