I Still Wish...

I first wrote and posted this piece in 2007. I have posted it every year since. My feelings have not changed. I believe it bears repeating. Perhaps more so this year after the horribly divisive and violent year we have had. While there has been change in the membership of the Supreme Court, we still have the same balance of conservative, moderate and liberal justices. The Supreme Court is key to this issue.

Today is the 37th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court Decision known as Roe v. Wade.

In light of this anniversary I have a few wishes to state:

- I wish, that from this moment on, no woman would ever have to make the decision to have an abortion.
- I wish contraceptives, including the morning after pill, would always be readily available to all women.
- I wish that all young people would be taught age appropriate sex and health education.
- I wish that all young people would be taught that abstinence is a legitimate choice, at the same time they get clear information about all forms of contraception.
- And I wish that abortion would always be safe and legal and available to all women.

good wishes all.

Thanks.

As Bill Clinton said, safe, rare, and legal.

Your wishes are absolutely worth posting everyday!

They would make excellent 'repeatable' tweets!

Peace,

Well said. Too bad most of the country can't have that sort of reasonable approach to contraception.

Oh, how I wish that this was something that more people took seriously! I remember reading this post previously and remember commenting on how poor our services relating to this are here in SA. There are just so many uneducated and poor people, so many orphaned and unloved kids and so many infected with HIV. I think I also commented last year that our current president had unprotected sex with an HIV positive woman (there was a whole case around it actually being rape too - this is our "respected leader"!!), knowing that she was HIV. His comment was something along the lines of having a shower to rid his chances of contracting the virus. Oh, he also has 5 wives and something like 45 kids. Our previous health minister also made some comment at an international convention about garlic and beetroot being curealls for HIV. How I wish for all that basic sex ed was better taught to everyone. When our leaders are demonstrating behaviour such as this, it's setting a very poor example to our youth who know no better!! I could rant on about this forever...

Hi Sue -
You have written passionately today and in the past about the terrible health and wellness challenges you have in South Africa. Our system is far from perfect, but I count our lucky stars we have advanced as far as we have.

May everyone have access to accurate and timely health information and treatment. And may we all have it very, very soon.
