Lovely

Here is an example of the way the Lily of the Valley I mentioned yesterday (Convallaria majalis) have settled quite happily in their new bed. This side of the house gets morning sun, but soon falls into deep shade for the remainder of the day. Many years ago, I planted Ivy (Hedera helix), Winter Creeper (Euonymus fortunei), Pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis) and Hosta all along the eastern side of the house. (Why yes, it was my ground cover period!) I just plopped them in somewhere between willy-nilly and evenly distributed. Because they have thrived, I can treat it as a nursery bed and divide a Hosta or pluck some plants to go be fruitful and multiply elsewhere. They all play well together and never fight, so I consider it a success!

Lovely picture, we have a little patch on the edge of the trees that once we have done some hard landscaping I intend to add to.

I like Solomon's Seal too, they sit pretty together with the Lily of the valley. As for Hostas, well I love them, but so do the damn slugs!

Hi All -
I have loved Lily of the Valley for as long as I can remember. We had them in the beds around the house I grew up in. I loved picking a handful with a couple of leaves and bringing them indoors. The smell was so simple, so captivating. Another favorite is Lilac - equally intoxicating, but far more powerful.

Thanks for the recommendation of Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum?) Roo. I was not familiar with it.

As for slugs, Chuck recommends beer - placed in a shallow dish in the garden. They're supposed to be attracted to it, fall in and drown. Charming eh?

Gorgeous pics of your flowers! I've never actually seen Lily of the Valley - they're so similar to our snow drops, which I'll post photos of as soon as they bloom (any day now!)
