Senior Moment? Out Of Touch? In Denial?

Senator John McCain was asked a simple question: “How many houses do you own?”. He couldn’t answer the question. He and his wife Cindy own eight.
Hello?

Another odd fact is that Senator McCain’s wife Cindy repeatedly states she is “an only child”. She’s not an only child. She has two half sisters. One is the daughter of Cindy’s mother from a previous marriage and the other is the daughter of Cindy’s father from a previous marriage.
Hello?

Just for the record, Chuck and I (and a bank) own one house.
I have two sisters.
Easy peasy...

It really would be difficult for me to imagine voting for a candidate who is so obviously in his dotage.

What kind of person denies their own sisters? That's really crummy. Nice wholesome family values there!

And, he can't remember how many houses he has?!? Yep, I'm sure he's in touch with the rest of us. The other guy is also rich but at least he acknowledges that a lot of people in this country are hurting. McCain seems pretty oblivious - about everything really.

I have to go be sick now :-(

WOW

If he can'r give a straight answer on something like this, what can we expect on the truly "important" issues.

Hi Jeff -
What's interesting is that some folks his age are sharp, lively and engaged. He seems slow and easily flummoxed. And if even half the stories of his legendary temper are true, it seems a troubling, if not dangerous combination.

Hi Claudia -
I could understand it if Cindy McCain said she had been "raised as if she were an only child". I certainly wouldn't quibble with that. But to repeatedly say she is an only child and not respond when NPR contacted her for a comment, that's just plain wrong.

As for how many houses Senator McCain has - apparently the number is now up to 10!

So sorry to trigger gastrointestinal upset for you so early in the morning!

Hi Gail -
It really was amazing to listen to the audio clip as he stammered his way through the answer and said he would need to have his staff get back to them!
Once upon a time I thought he had some positive qualities. Now I wouldn't trust Senator McCain any farther than I could throw him.

Terrible! Scary!

No one is actually going to vote for this guy are they?

Hi Ronnie -
Senator McCain has a lot of supporters. Some of whom, I think, will vote for McCain as a way to vote against Senator Obama.

After the 2004 election sent President George W. Bush back to the White house for a second term, I was amazed and disappointed.

I hope that 2008 will be the turning point and Americans will realize that casting a vote for John McCain would lead to the equivalent of four more years of a Bush-Cheney administration - or much worse!

Whoa! Hold up a minute.
People who live in glass houses etc...
We seem to be forgetting the Mr. Obama has a half brother who is
living in poverty in Kenya.
His 1/2 brother never even got to meet their father because he died before he was born.

He is a bright and pleasant young man who knows only what Barrack wrote about their father in his bestseller, which he pores over.

He isn't resentful an did finally meet Obama ("very awkward meeting") but the neighbors and friends think Mr. Obama could have done something to help him out. And personally I agree.

Barack Obama's 'lost' brother found in Kenya
Senator Barack Obama's long lost brother has been tracked down for the first time living in a shanty town in Kenya, reports claimed.

George Hussein Onyango Obama, Senator Barack Obama's long lost brother was tracked down living in a hut on the outskirts of Nairobi Photo: Guy Calaf, Vanity Fair, Italy The Italian edition of Vanity Fair said that it had found George Hussein Onyango Obama living in a hut in a ramshackle town of Huruma on the outskirts of Nairobi.

Mr Obama, 26, the youngest of the presidential candidate's half-brothers, spoke for the first time about his life, which could not be more different than that of the Democratic contender.

"No-one knows who I am," he told the magazine, before claiming: "I live here on less than a dollar a month."

According to Italy's Vanity Fair his two metre by three metre shack is decorated with football posters of the Italian football giants AC Milan and Inter, as well as a calendar showing exotic beaches of the world.

Vanity Fair also noted that he had a front page newspaper picture of his famous brother - born of the same father as him, Barack Hussein Obama, but to a different mother, named only as Jael.

He told the magazine: "I live like a recluse, no-one knows I exist."

Embarrassed by his penury, he said that he does not does not mention his famous half-brother in conversation.

"If anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related. I am ashamed," he said.

For ten years George Obama lived rough. However he now hopes to try to sort his life out by starting a course at a local technical college.

He has only met his famous older brother twice - once when he was just five and the last time in 2006 when Senator Obama was on a tour of East Africa and visited Nairobi.

The Illinois senator mentions his brother in his autobiography, describing him in just one passing paragraph as a "beautiful boy with a rounded head".

Of their second meeting, George Obama said: "It was very brief, we spoke for just a few minutes. It was like meeting a complete stranger."

George added he was no longer in contact with his mother and said:"I have had to learn to live and take what I need.

"Huruma is a tough place, last January during the elections there was rioting and six people were hacked to death. The police don't even arrest you they just shoot you.

"I have seen two of my friends killed. I have scars from defending myself with my fists. I am good with my fists."

Hi Kat/Karen -
Re: "People who live in glass houses etc..."

You seem to think that Senator Obama has behaved the way Senator McCain's wife Cindy has. To the contrary, Senator Obama has been clear that in addition to his half sister Maya (by his mother and her second husband), he also has seven half siblings by his father and his father's other wives and partners. I believe all of those half siblings were born in Kenya.

As for George, the youngest child of Barack Obama, Senior, he has refuted the claims made by the reporter you quote. According to the Times UK, George has said: “They say I live on a dollar a month, but this is all lies by people who don’t want my brother to win.”

Thanks for stopping by.

just didn’t want to admit he had 8 houses, as it may look a bit overmuch, particularly when so many people are losing the one and only house they did have. But the sister denial thing is odd, perhaps she just doesn’t like them. My answer to the sibling question is always, “one brother and one sister, that I know of” – since you can’t be too careful ;)

Chimming in with my two cents, put me and my family in the foreclosure column of former home owners and I do have three brothers and three sisters. Like Obama, most of my siblings live in a foreign land called Florida.

To my family, what's the chill factor?

Hi DMM -
I believe you are correct. And at last count, Senator McCain's home count is up to eleven!
I agree the sister thing is very odd. The insertion of one phrase: "raised as if I were an only child" would clarify it all.
Love your stock response!

Hi Papamoka -
The foreclosure crisis has touched so many families, neighborhoods and businesses. I fear worse is to come here in the northeast as the heating oil season wears on.
Florida is a foreign land compared to around these parts!

Hi Gail -
Oy!
What IS the chill factor?!
