Is That Dap In My Hair?
The recent excitement around our barn and the attendant expenses, while extremely reasonable (Thank you Roger!), have put our home improvement plans on a less ambitious timetable. That means that our elderly mature home will not be getting its windows replaced this season. So we put some time and energy into repairing and re-glazing some rickety tired windows and old fashioned, wood framed, hang on the outside of the house storm windows. Eight windows and far more Dap 33 Glazing than any professional worth their salt would be caught dead using, we no longer have an active MIT Wind Tunnel in our house!
Yay us!

ooh, I'm plotting and planning to replace the windows down the side of the long-thin house. Great minds (& elderly houses).
All our windows ae plastic, apart from the big ones at the back.... that's the frames, the clear stuff is still glass... I knew you knew that really ;o)
In the house here (renting) we have all replacement windows but the people that installed them did a crappy job. They didn't insulate the surrounding frame, and they never sealed them up on the exterior. Thus we have some nasty drafts coming in and throw the plastic up every year. Arggghhh!

There are so many choices of replacement windows it's a bit overwhelming. But I look forward to no drafts and tilt in windows = no ladders to the second floor!

Thanks for the first hand experience and warning!
The only firm decision we've made is to work on the new windows with Roger. So at least we'll be certain of great work! Now we just have to settle on the windows themselves. Because we have a wide range of windows now (6 over 6, 2 over 1, 9 over 6...!) just deciding on style is interesting.

Hey Lee - they came with the house (11 years back) I would say that the majority of house stock built in the UK over the past ten years has had UPVC windows frames. In our mild/wet/cold/damp/warm/sunny/cool climate they fit the bill. Wood looks so nice but UPVC foils can mimic the "real" look so well nowadays. Of course the other thing is that they tend to be double glazed and have a virtually maintenance free lifecycle.
The big panes in the kitchen though are steel frames around a double glazed unit, to take the weight.
So before I sound like a total window anorak, I'm off to scrub floors, tidy and prepare for dinner and guest ;o)
